Gibbs Park is a neighborhood city park in Huntington Beach that is always accessible to the general public. It is well-known for its Butterfly Grove, which offers, maintains, and enriches a local home for some of the most spectacular animals on the earth, including the magnificent Monarch Butterfly.

History

2008 saw the start of the Norma Brandel Gibbs Butterfly Park’s restoration when 179 dead and diseased Eucalyptus trees were removed. Flower beds were added to the North and South walls. For ten years, the monarch butterfly had not visited the park. Along with several nectar-producing flowers, milkweed—the monarch caterpillar’s sole food source—was added to the beds.

On October 23, 2013, more than 200 migratory butterflies visited the park and stayed until December 15. During the spring and summer months, the park has several different butterflies than the monarch living the park.
