Harriett M. Wieder Regional Park is located in Huntington Beach, Orange County. Harriett M. Wieder Park is a four-acre developed park with restrooms, a 24-car parking lot, an open turf area for picnicking, walkways made of decomposed granite, play structures for kids and toddlers, exercise equipment for the outdoors, native flora, and a panoramic lookout. Through the use of local plants and muted and creative materials for parking places, paths, seats, and playgrounds, the park was created to blend in with the surroundings. The park also has grading that recycles water runoff. Using a bio-swale system that captures site nuisance water, rain and irrigation water are locally absorbed to replenish groundwater. Along with the multi-use pathways, the park includes 30 acres of natural environment with native vegetation, a seasonal creek, and willow trees.
History
The initial park development plan was finished in 1992, but the concept for Harriett M. Wieder Regional Park (named after Harriett M. Wieder, the first woman elected to the Orange County Board of Supervisors in 1978 and who served until 1995) dates back to the mid-1970s.
As a consequence of the joint efforts of Supervisor James Silva, District II, and Huntington Beach City officials to obtain city and regulatory agency permits, conceptual design of the first phase of construction started in 2001. On September 20, 2002, Phase 1A of the project was officially launched, much to the delight of the locals. Wieder Park opened to the public on April 6, 2004, thanks to financing from Proposition 12 and Second District Urban Parks.
The 106-acre site is currently largely restricted by private development agreements and long-term oil leases, but the County currently controls around 33 acres of it as park land. One day, it hopes to have access to the full 106-acre site.
