The Huntington Beach Pier is a municipal pier located west of Main Street and west of Pacific Coast Highway in the Huntington Beach region. It is one of the longest public piers on the West Coast, measuring 1,850 feet (560 meters). (The longest, at 1,942 feet (592 meters), is Oceanside Pier.) The pier’s deck is 30 feet (9.1 meters) above sea level, while the 77-foot-tall restaurant structure at the pier’s end is 30 feet (9.1 meters) above sea level (23 m).

The Huntington Beach Pier is registered as a historical resource with the California Register of Historical Resources. It is one of 123 historic sites and districts in Orange County, California, that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (Ref. No. 89001203).

The pier is a significant landmark in Huntington Beach, popularly known as “Surf City, USA,” and serves as the focal point of the city’s vibrant beach culture. A favorite gathering spot for surfers, the ocean waves here are accentuated by a natural effect generated by the edge-diffraction of open ocean swells around Catalina Island, resulting in year-round consistent surf.

Features

The pier is popular with sport fishermen and fans of surfing. Ruby’s Diner opened in 1996 near the pier’s end and closed in late February 2021. Residents and visitors alike enjoy strolling along the pier. The pier is closed from 12 a.m. to 12 a.m., two hours after the beach closes to the public. There are public safety patrols on the beach and at the pier during curfew. On the pier, riding bicycles and skateboards is prohibited, as is smoking and the possession and/or consumption of drugs or alcohol. The City of Huntington Beach maintains a 24-hour webcam with a view westward from the pier.

Beach conditions and surf reports are updated throughout the day on the City of Huntington Beach website and via an automated phone line (714-536-9303). Surf, water, wind, and tidal information is included in the reports, including surf height, water temperature, wind speed, and high and low tide timings.

Special Occasions

Each year, the US Open of Surfing is held on the south side of the pier, organized by Vans and previously sponsored by Hurley, Nike, Converse, and others. It is the world’s largest surfing tournament, often lasting one week. As part of the event, renowned surfers are inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame and the Surfers’ Hall of Fame, both of which are located right across Main Street from the pier. The Surfing Walk of Fame features plaques placed on the Main Street sidewalk, while the Surfers’ Hall of Fame features surfer handprints. (Source: Wikipedia)
