Wisdom tooth removal is a common type of oral that adults will encounter at some point during their early adult life. These third set of molars erupt after the adult teeth have come in and can commonly cause problems because they can cause:

Partial eruption

This lets the bacteria enter around the opening and the tooth which could lead to pain, swelling, and infection.

Misaligned eruption

Gums and tissue between the last molar and incoming wisdom tooth could get pinched which can cause pain and swelling.

Wisdom tooth grows at an angle that pushes the other teeth which can cause pain and more severe oral health problems.

Why are wisdom teeth removed?

The wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth to develop. When they come out aligned properly and the gums are healthy it usually doesn’t need to be extracted. Oral surgery is needed when the teeth are not aligning properly or are affecting the gum tissue. It can come out sideways which can remain trapped under the bone or gums.

Misaligned teeth can cause a lot of problems. When they come out partially, the opening surrounding the tooth allows the bacteria to grow which could lead to infection. Some of the symptoms include stiffness, pain, swelling, and fever. The pressure from the tooth coming out may cause other teeth to shift and disrupt their current position. More serious problems could occur if the wisdom tooth is not extracted immediately such as tumors and cysts that could grow in the impacted wisdom tooth that can destroy the jawbone. It can also develop pericoronitis, a condition caused by the infected wisdom tooth surrounding the gums. When the impacted wisdom tooth gets removed, you will no longer be at risk of these conditions.

What is the Treatment for Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth or third molars are a part of the person’s natural set of teeth. These are the last set of teeth to come out, sometime between when the person is 17 to 25 years old. People generally have four wisdom teeth, although they can have fewer. In some cases, there might be more than four which are called supernumerary teeth. As it starts to come out, they usually affect the surrounding teeth.

When the wisdom teeth become impacted, it will grow sideways which is the reason it needs to be removed. Not all wisdom teeth can cause pain or problems during their development. In these situations, a person might feel slight discomfort as they come out, but when it has fully come out the discomfort will stop. Problems will start when there is not enough room for the tooth to erupt and will start pushing against the other teeth. Additionally, if it comes out because of crowding, food particles can get stuck easily between the teeth, and infections such as gingivitis may develop.

When you are experiencing pain during the wisdom teeth eruption, your wisdom teeth will need to be extracted. This is a relatively simple procedure and it involves the following steps.

Step 1:

At the start of the treatment, your mouth will be numbed with local anesthetic. If you are anxious during the treatment, a light sedative such as oral sedation or nitrous oxide may be used to calm you down.

Step 2:

In small extractions, a small incision is made to cut the tooth into smaller pieces so that it can easily be removed. How long this will take depends on the patient’s case.

Step 3:

After it is extracted, the patient may experience swelling and discomfort and it usually goes away after a couple of days.

The ADA states the following “The blood clots that form in the tooth socket is an important part of the normal healing process. You should avoid doing things that might disturb the clot”.

Place a cold compress outside your mouth, then remove them every 25 minutes. You can do this after the procedure to reduce swelling, inflammation, or bruising.

It is normal for you to bleed after the treatment; therefore you need to keep the gauze pad on the affected area for 30 minutes after the surgery.

First Two Hours After Surgery

Do not eat, speak, or drink at least two hours after the surgery. Do not use a straw when drinking to avoid displacing the blood clot. Make sure to brush and rinse your mouth gently to avoid coagulation.

Eating softer meals

Once the bleeding stops, drink lots of water to hydrate yourself. Be careful when eating foods, and only soft foods are allowed at this time. You can prevent blood clots from dislodging by not drinking carbonated beverages.

Take the medications and antibiotics as it is prescribed. Remember that if you are taking strong pain-relieving medications you should not operate heavy machinery or drive. Do not drink alcoholic beverages while under medication.

How many days off do you need for wisdom teeth treatment?

You will need 2 to 3 days off work after having wisdom teeth removed at Harbor Smiles. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Manali Patel DDS.

Can you live without removing them?

Yes. Even if the wisdom teeth have grown properly the location of the teeth makes them harder to clean. This can lead to the growth and development of bacteria that can develop health issues later in life.

Can get surgery to change your face?

Wisdom teeth removal rarely has an impact on the person's facial structure regardless of how the wisdom tooth has erupted.
